Press - the best intentions of the founder of the magazine were misdirected. The periodical was a failure and it was not long in folding. This is unfortunate as it has rightly been called the first porn magazine, and it may also have been the first spanking magazine. The magazine was edited by Frederic Pickes and published in London. It started in January, 1893.
Still, I don’t know if the industry will be able to sustain itself: the idea that a book about spanking would be a bestseller is probably laughable, but that has not stopped it from being published.
I wonder whether today marks the end of one era as well as the beginning of another. It seems that the advent of spanking will become a past tense. Henry James originally entered into an agreement with the Boston publisher James R. Osgood & Co. to publish the book in the United States for $4,000. Osgood made a separate agreement with The Century for the magazine to serialize the novel.
